Last week I put a survey out to the universe and asked as many teachers possible to answer some questions about how they use AI in the classroom.
Here are the results:
Teachers represented catholic, independent and public schools.
Most were based in NSW.
36% use AI with their students.
90% use AI to plan for their students.
Tools used are
ChatGPT
Gemini
Pilot
Open AI assist
Toddle
Canva
NSWEDUchat
Students use AI in the classroom:
In art lessons to work on descriptive language to generate images from chosen language.
Google AI overview to give students a start when researching, but teaching them about critical thinking and checking sources.
Teachers don’t use AI with students:
not appropriate for them (not a child friendly interface)
age limits
School has not allowed it
Students are not skilled to use or are not aware of safety.
Teachers us AI to plan:
Create maths word problems then differentiating them.
Creating narratives to introduce topics across the curriculum or social stories to address behaviour issues.
writing sentence variations for reports.
creating engaging lessons and assessments when programming.
creating worked examples of written responses according to criteria.
creating comprehension passages, questions and sample answers.
Rubrics for student assessment
Suggestions for science experiments with limited materials on hand.
General differentiation of all areas of the curriculum.
Support with writing goals for students.
